Historical region of Gemer

Gemer as the administrative region has been mentioned for the first time in a document dating from the year 1240. In 16th and 17th century it has been dominated mainly by the Turkish armies. Its industries have been heavily influenced by mining and metal processing. The eastern part of this area Horny ("Upper") Gemer is also a part of the Kosice self-governing region.

One of the best preserved Slovak historical fortresses is the castle Krasna Horka. Its name translated into English means "Pretty Hill". Among its most notorious owners was Frantisek Bebek, who at the beginning of 16th century seized by force the position of the lord of this castle used the fortress to make counterfeit coins. One of the last private owners of the castle Andrassy constructed for his wife and himself a secession style mausoleum using various types of marbles from all over Europe.

Renaissance manor house in Betliar belongs among the most beautiful of its kind in Slovakia. It has preserved original interior with rich collections of hunting trophies, including exotic exhibits from Africa and Asia. In 1994 this manor house received prestigious price Europe Nostra for the high quality reconstruction works done on this monument.

The gothic church of Roznava, the largest town of the Upper Gemer area, has a unique painting of St. Ann - Metercia from 1513 with realistic illustrations of iron ore mining and processing used in this town in the past. Since 1775 the town is the seat of the bishop. An interesting mining museum is also an attraction of the town which is well worth of a visit.
