Historical region of Zemplin
The largest historical region of Slovakia is Zemplin. It came into being in 11th century. After disintegration of Austro-Hungarian empire it has been joined also by the historical region of Uh. The agriculture was the main source of livelihood for its inhabitants. From 17th century on it was uninterruptedly the place of class and religious struggle. In 1831 the big East Slovak Cholera Uprising broke out here. The current Kosice self-governing region includes also the southern part of this historical region called Dolny ("Lower") Zemplin.
The town Michalovce is the industrial and cultural center of Zemplin. The classicist Sztaray manor with its exposits of Zemplin museum attracts the interest of the town visitors.
The town of Trebisov is dominated by the architecture of its baroque-classicist manor house from the end of 18th century. The English park behind the manor house has in one of its recesses a neo-gothic mausoleum of the major landlord of this area J. Andrassy built in 1893.
Wooden churches are also attractive architectural monuments of the historical Zemplin. These churches are the westernmost architectural monuments of the orthodox Christians. There are about 30 wooden churches, mostly in sparsely populated areas. The Kosice self-governing region has two of them, one in the village Ruska Bystra (1720) and one in Inovce (1836), both with well preserved original interior.
